Interview with David C. Saunders of K2 Advisors

David Saunders has been involved in the investment and trading of financial instruments since 1983. He has worked at Tucker Anthony & R.L. Day as an equity trader; First Boston Corp. as Vice President on the equity block trading desk; WaterStreet Capital, a hedge fund, as Head Trader; Tiger Management, as Head Trader; WorldSec Securities as President and ABN Amro Inc. as a Senior Managing Director. He co-founded K2 Advisors in 1994. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1981 with a B.S. degree in Business. A pHugues Gilibertioneer in fund cost calculation in Europe, from 1996, Hugues developed Fitzrovia International alongside Paul Moulton before selling their well-respected business to Lipper. After 4 successful years as Head of New Ventures at Thomson Reuters, Hugues setup FITZ Partners. He has supported Working Groups on fund expenses for INREV, ALFI or now EIOPA, and spoken at diverse asset management events. Hugues Gillibert: This is correct, Fitz Partners delivers fund fees and expenses benchmarks. In order to create relevant and quality benchmarks we calculate our own fund fee data. We do not collect any fee data from asset managers or from published marketing materials but, for each and every 19,000 share class in our database we have calculated their fees from the funds audited accounts. He sits on several advisory committees and is a permanent member of the “Haut Comité de Place”, a think tank set up by the Luxembourg Ministry of Finance. As the implementation of UCITS V is getting closer: what are the relevant dates and key areas to keep an eye on?
Freddy Brausch: As you may know, the UCITS V Directive was published in the Official Journal on 28 August 2014 and became effective from 17 September 2014. It will have to be implemented before March 2016 and Luxembourg is intending to be a fast mover in that area as in previous cases. A draft law is already available. Claire Cummings qualified as a solicitor in 1996 and since then has specialised in the legal issues surrounding both funds and fund management. As a solicitor in private practice, she has acted for a number of clients in the alternative investment arena and built up experience of a wide range of legal and regulatory matters. Mrs. Cummings has acted as in-house counsel and director of legal and compliance for a fund manager, where she was involved in the running and growth of a fund management business and worked closely with other directors, the trading and operations departments and brokerage counterparties. In July 2002 Mrs. Cummings established Cummings and draws on her experience as both a lawyer and a director of a fund management company to work with her clients as they establish and build their businesses.
